Background of the Study

Traditional medicine has been a significant part of healthcare in many parts of the world, including Africa. In Nigeria, traditional medicine continues to coexist with modern healthcare practices, often serving as the first line of treatment for many patients, particularly in rural areas (Adewumi et al., 2023). Nurses, as integral members of the healthcare team, are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between traditional and modern medicine. The knowledge that nurses possess about traditional medicine can influence patient care, either by promoting complementary care or by improving communication with patients who may rely on traditional healing practices.

At Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Sokoto, nurses' knowledge of traditional medicine could potentially enhance patient outcomes by providing culturally sensitive care and addressing patients' concerns regarding traditional treatments. However, there is a need to assess how this knowledge is being utilized and its impact on patient care, particularly in an environment where modern and traditional medical systems often coexist in parallel.

This study will evaluate the impact of nurses’ knowledge of traditional medicine on patient care at FMC Sokoto. By understanding how nurses integrate traditional medicine into their practices, this research will contribute to improving patient-centered care and fostering collaboration between traditional and conventional healthcare practices.

Statement of the Problem

Although traditional medicine plays a critical role in the Nigerian healthcare system, the extent to which nurses' knowledge of traditional medicine influences their clinical practice remains understudied. At FMC Sokoto, many patients rely on both traditional and modern healthcare, yet nurses' ability to incorporate traditional knowledge into patient care has not been explored. This study seeks to assess the impact of nurses' knowledge of traditional medicine on patient care and identify how it affects clinical outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess nurses' knowledge of traditional medicine at FMC Sokoto.

2. To evaluate the impact of this knowledge on patient care and outcomes.

3. To identify ways in which nurses can improve their integration of traditional medicine into modern healthcare practice.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of nurses' knowledge of traditional medicine at FMC Sokoto?

2. How does nurses' knowledge of traditional medicine influence patient care and outcomes?

3. In what ways can nurses enhance the integration of traditional medicine into their practices?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses' knowledge of traditional medicine positively influences patient care and outcomes at FMC Sokoto.

2. Nurses with greater knowledge of traditional medicine provide more culturally sensitive and patient-centered care.

3. There is a lack of formal training or integration of traditional medicine in nursing education at FMC Sokoto.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the knowledge of traditional medicine among nurses at FMC Sokoto and its impact on patient care. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews. Limitations may include the subjective nature of assessing patient outcomes and potential biases in self-reported data.
